COLON THEATER BUENOS AIRES
COLON THEATER BUENOS AIRES
The Colon Theatre - in spanish Teatro Colón - is the most famous opera house in Latin America. Bigger than the famous Scala of Milan, this opulent building is considered one of the top five opera houses worldwide.
Inaugurated in 1908 with a performance of “Aida” (the most famous opera of Giuseppe Verdi) has a very eclectic style with influence from the Corinthian and Ionic, to the pure French art style ,and Italian Renaissance ornaments. The launch of Colon Theater was during the wealthiest Argentine period when the constructions were prosperous in all Buenos Aires, and so was the cultural life for immigrants and residents.
World famous artists like Enrico Carusso, Igor Stravinsky, Maria Callas, Arturo Toscanini, Maia Plisetskaia, Rudolf Nureyev, Placido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti, and local Julio Bocca, among other music or ballet representatives have been hosted by the Colon Theatre in their distinctive and successful performances. Colon Theater also offers many popular festivals and concerts at very low cost allowing people to enjoy their favorite bands and artists. Furthermore, there are very interesting spectacles for children, students, and the elderly audience on Sunday mornings.
The acoustic of the theatre is excellent, considered to be one of the best in the world, as well as the ballet company, philharmonic orchestra and choir. The Colon Theatre season runs from March to December. During summer time, many activities of the theatre are performed in open-air venues, such as parks, gardens or other government theatres, at very low prices for the general public.
Also the capacity of Colon Theater is remarkable since it is able to host more than 3,000 seated people and over 700 standing. The main room, “la grande salle”, houses different galleries the visitants can attend in accordance with different price rates. The top gallery for instance, called “Paraíso”, is the most economic gallery. However, watching a performance form its premises still remains an unforgettable experience.
Colon Theater provides the tourists with guided tours. These visits, normally between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., include an overview of the backstage and many sections, such as the costumes and designs workshops, theater museum and the rehearsal hall. Unfortunately, some parts are not included in the guided visit such as the golden hall (with its splendid chandelier with more than 700 lights), the marble staircase leading to the main balcony, la “grande salle” with 3,000 seats, and the magnificent dome painted by argentine artist, Raúl Soldi. Nevertheless, it is possible to enjoy these luxurious pieces when attending a concert, a ballet or one of the operas usually played in this “national theatre”.
Getting tickets for the demanding performances in the Colon theatre is not an easy job. Many seats are owned by the season-ticket-holders, thus the remaining places are generally sold 2 days before the events. Therefore, we recommend going to the ticket office, where purchasing the tickets is an easy process, and there are also weekly programs available.
It is important to have in mind; that because of the Colon Theatres 200th anniversary there will be a total renovation of the building. Unfortunately this renovation will keep the building closed until May of 2008.
