El Tigre Buenos Aires
The confluence of five rivers forms the delta of Tigre, at approximately 30 km from Buenos Aires downtown.
This current northern suburb of the province of Buenos Aires was considered a summer vacation place for wealthy people in the late 1800´s.
Many facts influenced the Tigre’s region development during the last century, such as the yellow fever epidemic and the railroads construction. Many railway builders were British people, who gave their sign and style to the zone. Most mansions in this area were made in Victorian, Tudor or pure British architectural style, giving a particular flavor to the area nowadays.
At present, Tigre shows a splendid development in terms of real estate. Several illuminated buildings and modern structures come along the highway (called The Panamericana). Its avenues, surrounded by lonely mansions with vast gardens have recently renewed their residents. Young people have chosen this neighborhood as their new home. Far from the stress of the capital, these green areas are now the favorite for entire families with children, becoming new “countries”.
Tigre neighborhood is integrated by two diverse areas: the main land and the islands. While many islands are still wild and natural, Tigre locality encloses in its most modern areas high-rise constructions, important commercial and educational centers, rowing clubs and marinas.
A renamed tourism gathering point Tigre attracts both portenos (people living in Buenos Aires) and foreigners because of the range of attractions it offers.
In the islands, visitors can enjoy boats, catamarans and vessels tours either for an entire or half day, in addition to excellent barbecues in the near by resorts. In summer time it is possible to sunbathe, swim or just relax, or even water ski in the different channels, where no boats or yachts are allowed.
Rowing fans practice in the rivers, during the evenings even in winter.
Some old rowing clubs, such as Cannotieri Italiani, Buenos Aires Rowing Club, and Rowing Club Argentina still offer their services by the Lujan river, in front of the railway station, as well as in one of the islands of the Delta, quite far from Tigre.
Tigre commercial port houses the Puerto de Frutos (Fruit Port), settled in an old warehouse where regional merchandise and fruits are sold. During week-ends it becomes a demanding place, where visitors can bargain and find whatever they are looking for, from a simple basketwork chair to an exotic tropical plant, from simple handcrafts to expensive folk furniture or silver goods. Near by many cafés and restaurants facing the river offer excellent argentine meat.
There are many other important venues that worth a visit and offer guided tours for the tourists. Among them Museo de la Reconquista, Museo Naval de la Nación and the legendary Tigre Hotel. If you travel with kids, do not miss Parque de la Costa, an enjoyable playing area which offers live shows and attractions. Tigre also has its own Casino, opened from Thursdays to Sundays.
Visitors can easily access to this joyful area. There are 2 different train lines: one leaving from Retiro station (in the downtown), and a tourist train called “Tren de la Costa” leaving from Olivos, in the province of Buenos Aires. It can also be reached through Panamericana highway (via Acceso Norte-Ramal Tigre)
